1. Spruce Up your Dingy Carpets

Use a portable carpet cleaner with a rotating brush to refresh your carpets in between deep cleanings :

  • Sprinkle carpet deodorizer or baking soda on your carpet to remove any pet odours.

  • Gently work the baking powder into your carpet with a brush and let it sit for half an hour.

  • Vacuum the baking powder from the carpet.

2. Pay Attention to your Doormats

Use two mats, one outside and one inside the door, to trap extra dirt. Outdoor rugs can be refreshed by hosing them down and letting them air dry. Vacuum both sides of the indoor ones. Going over the back will drive out stored dirt onto the floor.

3. Wipe the Walls Clean

Wipe your walls with a moist microfiber cloth to remove greasy fingerprints, dust, and stains. Start from the top and work your way down. Extra points if you wipe down the baseboards and door frames as well!

4. Clean the Windows and Dust the Blinds

Wipe clean your windows on a cloudy day and begin on the shady side of the home since the direct sun can cause streaking on the glass. Next, raise the blinds or drapes and clean the windows with a microfiber towel and glass cleaner. Then finish off by dusting the blinds or drapes with a duster.

5. Vacuum your Furniture

Drag your furniture away from the walls and vacuum behind and beneath it. While you're at it, clean the woodwork and air vents too. Then use the upholstery tool on your machine to go over the cushions. Using the crevice tool to remove dirt from the trim and stitching is an excellent idea.

6. Clean the Microwave using Steam

Get rid of those annoying food stains for good! Fill a large bowl with a cup of water and sliced lemon or some tablespoons of vinegar. Place it inside the microwave to clean it. Turn the appliance on high for 15-20 minutes, or until the solution boils and the window steams. After that, wait for a few minutes before opening the door. Remove the bowl and wipe the microwave from the inside out.

7. Clean the Fridge Thoroughly

Give the removable fridge shelves a deep clean now and again, and occasionally wash out the inside shelving of your fridge. To get rid of food contamination and spillage, remove the door shelves and bins and wash them in warm, soapy water.

8. Freshen up your Stained Cutting Boards

You're mistaken if you believe that stain on your cutting board is permanent. Rub a sliced lemon over the board to eliminate food stains and odours. Sprinkle it with salt or baking soda for a better clean. Then, scrub the board and wash it off with warm water.

9. Scrub Cooking Pots and Pans

Add water and dish liquid to your cookware and let it simmer on the stove to soften the burned-on residue. Remove any residual stuck-on particles with a hard sponge. Ketchup aids in the removal of tarnish from copper pots and other copper cooking utensils. If you come across stubborn spots, massage some ketchup over the surface and add a pinch of salt for extra oomph.

10. Clean Out your Oven

De-gunking your oven should be an important element of your spring cleaning checklist. Use the self-cleaning feature on your appliance to get rid of sticky, baked-on filth. Alternatively, if your oven doesn't have that feature, place a hot, moist towel on top of burned patches to dissolve the gunk. Next, scrub with a heavy-duty sponge after sprinkling some baking powder. Rinse and dry thoroughly.

11. Deep Clean Kitchen Cabinets

Grime in the kitchen combines dust and grease that accumulates over time. Run the exhaust hood every time you cook to keep grease from settling on the surfaces. Then, use a cabinet cleaner to cut through filth to de-gunk.

12. Freshen up the Drains

Mix ½ cup baking soda with 1/4th cup table salt to freshen drains and keep them free-flowing. Pour this mixture with 1 cup or some warmed vinegar down the drain. It will foam up and bubble up. Leave it for a few minutes. After that, run hot tap water for 20-25 minutes. This is particularly useful for rarely used drains, such as those in guest bathrooms.

13. Disinfect your Washing Machine

Clean your washing machine by adding bleach and running the special washer cleaning cycle on your machine. You can also use a washing machine cleaner for this job.

14. Get Rid of Hard Water Buildup From the Shower Head

Hard water buildup can leave nasty stains and possibly reduce water flow from your shower head. If washing with a sponge fails to remove the junk from the water holes, you can clean the showerhead and restore its flow using a few kitchen items. Combine equal parts of white vinegar and water in a plastic bag and wrap the bag over the showerhead. Ensure the showerhead is completely submerged in the solution. Tie the bag over the shaft for up to an hour, wipe away any residue with a damp cloth and rinse the vinegar out of your shower with hot water.

15. Discard Expired Cosmetics

Expired skincare, makeup and hair items are an easy way to declutter quickly. Even though not all products have an expiration date, many specify how long the product will last once it's opened.

16. Get Rid of Old Clothes

Toss out anything discoloured or worn out from the previous season's clothing and shoes from your wardrobe. Try it on before you put something in your closet you are unsure about.

17. Disinfect Children's Toys

Please don't overlook the convenience of your washing machine or dishwasher when cleaning your children's toys! Choose the fast cycle on your dishwasher for plastic toys and skip the hot dry. Check the care tag on stuffed toys before putting them in a mesh bag or pillowcase and then dumping them in the washing machine on a mild cycle.

18. Bring your Bookshelves back to Life

Your reading corner may require cleaning after all those nice winter reading sessions. First, organize the books on your coffee table, bedside novels, and magazines. You can sort by size, alphabetize, or colour coordinate. Make sure you clean the shelves using a duster before placing anything back in its place.

19. Scrub Garbage Cans

Garbage bags burst, and washing your trash can is the only way to keep odours out of your home. To clean the inside of your garbage can, spray it down and scrub it with a sponge and your preferred dish soap. Then, please give it a thorough rinse and let it air dry. You can also dry the cans using a microfiber cloth. To keep the outside of the garbage can clean and spotless, wipe it with a sanitizing wipe occasionally.

20. Clean your Outdoor Furniture

Now that the weather is getting warmer, it's time to get your outdoor furniture ready for relaxing. To do so, mix some dish detergent with warm water in a bowl and wipe down the tables and chairs. After spraying them with water, allow them to air dry.
